PART ONE (credit to Snarky Archies)

ABC: This is Andrea Dresdale with ABC Radio. And today
we are talking with David Archuleta who has his first Chistmas CD out,
“Christmas From the Heart.” Welcome, David.

David: Ahh, thanks!
ABC: You know, when
you do a Christmas album you can go several ways. You can do
contemporary stuff, you can do traditional stuff, you can do original
songs. But you kind of have a mix of everything on this album. Did you
want to have a little something for everyone?
David: Yeah, I want– I always want a little bit of
something for everyone, ’cause not everyone’s the same. But it went
down more the traditional route because it’s called “Christmas From the
Heart.” And I wanted it to be heartfelt kind of music, but I still
wanted a little bit of fun, interesting kind of stuff, so we have that
on the album, too.

ABC: Now did you have some favorite Christmas songs
that you absolutely had to record? When the talk came about you having
to record a Christmas album were you like, “Well, I definitely have to
put this song and that song on there.”
David: Well, hmm, I guess “O Holy Night” is always
one. Although that’s a difficult song to sing, but that’s one I’ve
always done. I’ve always performed ever since I was little. I don’t
sing as high as I did when I was little. It’s still one I feel is a
classic one and one I had to have on the album.

ABC: So, you have an original song on the album, “Melodies of Christmas.” Tell me about that song.
David: “Melodies of Christmas.” It’s a song that talks
about what the melodies of Christmas songs mean to people. The
Christmas season, everyone gets so excited about it and starts
listening to Christmas music even before Thanksgiving. And I guess what
I’m learning now is even before Halloween sometimes. It does a lot for
people. It brings back memories, and it brings back special times that
they’ve had. It brings back the times in past Christmas seasons
throughout the years. It’s about what those melodies do for people and
how it stays with them. And about all the memories, basically, yeah.

ABC: So tell me about dueting with Charice on the
album. Now this is somebody people have seen on Oprah. I know she’s
kind of like Oprah’s protege. I know you have a lot of Filipino fans
and they obviously know who she is. So were you guys in the studio
together when you recorded this song?
David: That’s what’s interesting, we weren’t able to.
We missed each other just by a little bit, like, a few days. I was on
tour, so the only times we were able to record, we weren’t able to do
it together, unfortunately. Maybe we’ll be able to do it together
sometime, though. That’d be kind of fun to sing something together.
It’s funny, though, ’cause she’d leave like– she recorded first, so in
her recordings she’d leave like little messages and stuff. So it was
fun to listen to. She’s funny.

ABC: So tell me what fans can expect from the
Christmas tour. How much will of the stuff will be Christmas music? How
much will be your hits? Other songs?
David: You know, it will be about half and half, I
think because I don’t want people to be just be like, “It’s all
Christmas. It’s all like this the whole entire time.” Like I said,
something for everyone. Not everyone is 100% familiar with all the
Christmas songs. Sometimes they want to hear the stuff that they become
familiar with throughout the year. So we’ll be doing some pop stuff.
So, yeah, about half of what I’m doing will be more pop stuff and more
kind of fun. Just to give that liveliness to it. But then the other
half will be more laid-back and more about the time of the year and
just kind reflecting more on that time and singing the Christmas songs.

ABC: Do you look at these performances as a nice
way for people to celebrate the season? It’s almost going to be like
part of their Christmas celebration, or their holiday celebration, to
come out and see you. Do you want to make it a special experience?
David: Aww, that would be so cool if they thought of
it that way. That’s what I want to do. I want to make sure that it
complements what else is going on this year. What people are thinking
about around this time of the year, er, around that time of the year.
It’s not quite here yet, but it’s getting close. But I’d love to make
it– help them make it a special time of the year. And just kind of make
them think about the year and what it’s all about. And just let them
have a n enjoyable time.

ABC: So what are some of your family Christmas
traditions? Did you always have certain Christmas songs or albums
playing in your house when you were growing up?
David: On my mom’s side we usually were kind of like
partying, like celebrating and dancing and singing. On both sides, we
always did, like, talent shows. So it was kind of funny. On my dad’s
side it was more laid-back. We’d have the Christmas dinner and sing
together. We’d each take turns in the family playing an instrument, or
singing a song, or telling a story. It was realy nice. It always
brought a really nice spirit to just that time, and with the family.
And on my mom’s side it was always a lot more lively. They’d always
dance. It was just really about having a good time and celebrating. And
once it was midnight everybody would just hug and do stuff like that.
They’d have talent shows, too, but it was like– my mom and her sisters
were always more organized and wanted it to be more like a show. So it
was a lot of fun, well, on both sides. So I guess that’s a big thing. I
love spending time with my family. I always say that. I think it’s
important to keep those memories with you. It’s the best thing you can
take with you in your life. And the best thing you can have are those
memories. I don’t know why, but they do so much for me. I don’t
remember anything I ever got for Christmas, but I remember what we did
together.

ABC: Do you and your siblings, I know you have a lot of them, exchange gifts?
David It changes. It changes like every year. We don’t
really have a tradition with the way Christmas presents are done. Like
before they’d just be from our parents. And then some years we’d get
assigned someone and buy a present for them. And then there would be
others years when we thought didn’t really need presents. If you aren’t
really going to cherish and treasure if for the rest of you life
anyway, it’s like I don’t want to take presents for granted and stuff.

ABC: Were you one of those families that opened presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
David: Christmas morning, definitely. I don’t think
we’ve ever done it Christmas Eve. It’s always been about the Christmas
Day. Something we’d use to always do was we’d go Christmas caroling.
And that was fun. I loved doing that. It’d be me, my brother, and my
sister. And sometimes my other little sister, and I guess sometimes my
other little sister, too, ’cause I have two of them. It would just be
fun. That’s one of my favorite thing about Christmas. One of my
favorite memories. Just being able to go to somebody’s house and see
how happy they are. It’s like, how happy they were to see that you came
over to sing to them. And sometimes they were people who may not have a
whole lot of visitors even though it’s the Christmas time where it’s
supposed to be about family and friends and stuff. Some people as they
get older, they just lose contact with their family and lose contact
with their friends and stuff, so they don’t really have a whole lot of
people. So being able to go and give something to them, even though
it’s not like this physical present, being able to still give something
them for the holidays is a really special thing.

ABC: Are any of the songs that you guys used to sing as a family Christmas caroling on the album?
David: Yeah, they are! “O Come All Ye Faithful” is one
we used to do. And that’s why I was happy to have on there. And “Silent
Night” as another one we used to do. And “Angels We Have Heard On
High.” Those were the three main ones we’d sing. So I’m really happy
that they are all on the album. It reminds me of memories when I was a
kid. So that’s something that was important for me with this album
actually. To make sure to have some of those memorable songs for me
that I grew up with and grew up with really cherishing as a kid. So it
was exciting to have them be a part of the album.

Trích dẫn :
PART TWO
ABC: You are working on your next album now. I know
you were Nashville writing last week. Tell me what direction is going
in, what kind of sound we can expect.
David: Yeah, I was. Hmm. Well, you know, it’s going to
be another pop album. I’m not really a writer, this amazing writer or
anything. But I love to do it. It’s neat being able to really bring
yourself into a song. With the people who I was working with in
Nashville, they really allow you to do that. The people I was working
with really wanted to make sure that I was bringing myself into these
songs. I really feel like more of my personality is coming into these
songs. We just started, but already I feel like it’s such a great
start. It was like writing camp for me there. Because we were doing it
everyday, all day. But I never got sick of it. I never got tired of it.
And that’s what I love. I love being able to work on music all day long
and not get tired of it because I love to do it. I felt that I was
really allowed to do that. Just the people I was working with, you
know. There was this girl Joy Williams who just was so great and was so
much fun to work with. And there were other people named like Jeremy
Bose and Robert Marvin. They’re just really great people. What I liked
was that they focused on the music. It wasn’t about “Oh well, this is
good, but is it a number one single? Because that’s what we need.” That
shouldn’t be how great songs are written. It should be about “Yeah, I
connect with this song. I feel good about this song. And I can’t wait
for people to hear this song.” I want to be able to feel that when I
write a song because I feel that’s the most important thing.
ABC: So looking forward to the release of this
album, do you feel it’s going to have a lot more view on it? Because
you’ve grown as a writer, as a singer, as a performer– it’s going to be
sort of a more complete picture of who you are as an artist right now?
David: Yeah, I think so. Definitely. There’s something
about when you are part of writing a song, you feel so much more of a
connection to the a song. You feel like, “Yeah. This is me. This is my
song. This is my story I have to tell the people. This is a story I
want to share with people. This is something that has been on my mind
and that I want to let out.” The biggest thing I think is being able to
share it with people. Not just being able to share a song with them,
but share an idea with them. And share a thought with them. I think
that’s what’s been cool about working on writing for me in the last
couple of weeks.
ABC: It’s funny, you’ve got the Christmas album and
you are already writing for second, and you haven’t even hit the first
anniversary of the release of your debut album. Is that amazing that
you’re actually approaching the one year anniversary? When you think
back on all those things that have happened to you in that past year,
it must be pretty overwhelming, huh?
David: Yeah, it’s crazy. It feels like more than a
year, to be honest, just because so much has been going on. Wow. I
didn’t think about that. It’s been over a year since I started working
on the album, but I didn’t realize that people haven’t even had that
music for a year even. Man! That’s weird. I can’t wait for them to hear
the next album. That’s what it’s all about to keep on moving forward
and keep on defining yourself. In life and in music. I’m working on
both of them. Still 18, I have a lot of defining to do still. It’s fun
to see that I’m already starting to grow as an artist. Before it was
like “How am I going to grow? I’m such a slow-paced kind of person.” I
still am, but it’s neat to see- it’s kind of like moving slowly but
surely. And I like that.
ABC: Do you kind of feel for what Kris Allen and
Adam Lambert are going through right now desperately trying to finish
their albums?
David: Oh man. Oh my gosh, that’s so hard to do. It’s
really interesting. We were talking on our way here actually about
Allison Iraheta, too. She’s working on an album, too, and she’s younger
than me. It’s just crazy to go through all of that especially at a
young age where it’s like, “Wow. I still need time to think about
what’s going on here. I still am a teenager. Still trying to find
myself.” Even people– Adam and Kris aren’t that old either. They have
that small amount of time while they’re on tour to finish an album.
That’s crazy. It’s like, “What’s going on here?” You know, I think they
are both really talented. From hearing their new songs that are out,
they are just awesome songs. I was kind of just jamming to them last
night and yesterday. I’m really looking forward to hearing their stuff.
I know it must have been really crazy for them, but it sounds like they
are both really excited about the stuff that’s coming out.
ABC: Yeah, and they seem to have been working with
really great people, too. I bet you are probably really interested in
checking out the next season of Idol, because of all the changes.
David: So many changes? Oh with Ellen!
ABC: Yeah, with Ellen. The departure of Paula and the new judge. And everybody seems to play an instrument now.
David: Everyone seems to play an instrument?
ABC: Well, it just seems that after your season,
the playing of an instrument became much more standard, I guess. And
changing arrangements has become much more standard. And of course the
whole departure of Paula, and the introduction of Ellen. It’s not your
father’s Idol anymore; it’s not even your Idol anymore. What do you
think about that?
David: Yeah, that’s pretty interesting. I didn’t think
about all the instrument playing stuff. It will be really interesting
to watch. It will be kind of fresh, you know, with the changes. I love
Ellen. I think she’s so cool. I think she’ll will definitely bring a
lot more character into the show and bringing herself into it. And
everybody loves Ellen. So I can’t wait to see what she has to say and
what she has to bring.
ABC: You have a crazy schedule, but you always try to make time for the show, I guess.
David: Yeah, I try to keep up with it. It was really
hard this year to keep up with everything that was going on. But you
try to keep up as much as you can.
ABC: So coming up you said that the tour was going
to start later in November. Are you going to have time off for
Thanksgiving and be with your family?
David: Um, I don’t know. I know the first couple of
shows start before Thanksgiving. So I’m not sure if we’ll be traveling,
or what will be going on. It would be nice, though, to spend time with
the family. ‘Cause I don’t think we’ve really ever missed a
Thanksgiving dinner or celebration. ‘Cause even last year I, um–
ABC: Last year you did the parade, I know.
David: Yeah, I did the parade. But we were able to fly
back to Utah that night and still make it to spend time with the
family. Which was like “whoa, I can’t believe we did that.” But I don’t
know if we’ll be able to do that this year. But it would be nice. It
would be nice. I’d at least be able to see some of the family.
ABC: Finally I wanted to ask you about your
relationship with your fans. You and your fans are really tight ’cause
you are constantly communicating with them. You are always posting
video blogs, you’re always talking to them on Twitter. It’s like you’re
never off Twitter. You’re on Twitter 24/7.
David: Oh no. *laughs* I’m not on Twitter as much as
other people. I try to not be on it too much because it’s like I don’t
want to look like I don’t have a life or anything. Or talk to much
’cause sometimes you can get kind of irritating. But I try to keep them
updated on what’s going on with me and what I’m thinking about. Just
let them know what’s happening and keeping them posted. And I try to
put video blogs to each week. So I haven’t put one up this week yet,
but maybe I can do that later today when I have some time.
ABC: Do you like the instant feedback you get from
fans? Like for example them telling you how much they like your
Christmas album or whatever?
David: I love, I love to hear what they have to say
about that. It just makes you feel so good. And it makes you feel like
“Yes, I spent my time well on making the album.” And it’s just good to
know that you’re appreciated for what you do. Especially when you’re
trying to– you put a lot of work into giving this music to people. So
it means a lot to hear when people say, “Yeah, we really like your
Christmas music and really enjoy what you’re doing and keep it up.” It
keeps you motivated and it keeps you going.”
ABC: Congratulations on the album.
David: Aw, thank you. Thank you very much.
ABC: And we’ve been talking to David Archuleta and
his Christmas radio. And for ABC Radio and for ABCradio.com, I’m Andrea
Dresdale.
