David Archuleta: Already serving a mission


David Archuleta hasn't let success spoil him.

Even
though he recently wrapped up his first headlining tour and his
self-titled first CD debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (and is
nearing platinum status), he's still just a kid from Murray.

"I
was amazed at how many people came to my concerts," Archuleta observed
during an interview Wednesday. "I knew people liked me on 'American
Idol,' but I didn't think they'd care to come see me sing at my own
show."

Salt Lake fans will get a chance to see the "American Idol" runner-up at an event on Saturday, June 6, at the Rio Tinto Stadium.

It will a nice break for Archuleta, who is working on two new CDs, one of which will be for Christmas.

"We're
still trying to decide what songs might be best," he said about the
Christmas release. "They'll probably be my favorite Christmas songs,
and we might need to come up with more different approaches.

"The
pop album is different, (because) you need to try to find what suits
you best," he said. "I definitely want to get more involved with the
writing. But I feel like I have writer's block 24/7, with little
openings. We've all got our weaknesses, and that's mine."

While Archuleta likes singing for his fans, especially locally, he loves being able to spend time with his family in Murray.

"It's
the boring things that mean a lot to me," he said. "I enjoy taking my
sisters to eat. Or sitting watching TV with my family."

Archuleta also loves spending time with friends he hasn't seen for months, although this time at home, most of his closest friends have departed on missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"It's crazy, because I went to five farewells and sang at two," he said.

When
asked about his own plans for serving an LDS mission, Archuleta, who
doesn't turn 19 until December, said he feels as if he's already on one.

"There
is so much that I want to give back to the One who has blessed me with
this gift," he said about his singing abilities. "I feel that there
must be a reason why I'm here, doing what I'm doing. And I want to make
sure that I do what is expected of me before it all ends.

"I
don't know when this all will end, and I want to make sure I do all
that I'm supposed to before that happens. I have this opportunity and
want to make the best of it."

This week, Archuleta's Murray High classmates will graduate. He won't be one of the class of 2009.

"When
I joined 'American Idol,' I had to stop school," he said. "Those who
were the younger contestants worked with a studio teacher, but I
couldn't keep up."

Archuleta said he is working on — and hoping to — earn his high-school diploma. "I want to, but it's hard."

Salt Lake fans can see the "American Idol" runner-up Saturday at a Real Salt Lake soccer match.

He
is scheduled to sing the national anthem at 7:30 p.m., before the Real
Salt Lake/Colorado Rapids game, as well as sing a four-song
mini-concert at the showdown's end.

The event is part of the Rio
Tinto Stadium's "Charity Begins At Home" event, which will celebrate
the military and the official dedication of stadium.

Proceeds
from the ticket sales will benefit "Operation Warmheart," which serves
Hill Air Force Base and the Utah National Guard Charitable Trust by
assisting families with various expense challenges when a family member
is deployed.

"I like doing
things for good causes," Archuleta said about his involvement with the
event. "I was contacted about it, and it sounded fun."

David Archuleta is in the public eye week after week. His every word is reported and scores of images are taken of him every day. Will this David behave any differently when there aren’t cameras and recording devices pointed his way? The David planting trees in Utah to earn his Eagle ranking is the same person performing for 50,000 screaming fans in Asia. He could be in an interview with Larry King watched by millions worldwide or attending a local Fireside service with just a few dozen people. He doesn’t have a David Archuleta 6.0 version for special situations. David…is always David.

To be able to be oneself is a great gift. And when we can be ourselves comfortably without being afraid of how others perceive us, something amazing happens. We in turn become more accepting of others. You can see that quality in David. He doesn’t sit in judgement of other people. Making fun of others can be almost a sport for some of us. But that is something David will not tolerate. Some of America’s disc jockeys have tried in vain to get David to comment in a negative way about someone. But David is quick to defend and with a smile and a shake of his head he has humbled some of the interviewers and made his fans very proud.

In an April 2009 interview with the New Straits Times Press, David spoke about fame and being true to himself: “I’m always so busy!” he said, adding that he never expected to be in the spotlight at his age. “It has been a great experience and a lot of fun. I’m just glad to be living my dream,” he said. Archuleta acknowledges the pressure that comes with fame. “There are lots of expectations from fans and critics alike.” He deals with it, he said, by staying true to himself, and the music and songs with which he’s comfortable.


Who knows, he might drink milk straight out of the carton like some of us do. But when it comes to the important choices, David’s adherence to being completely himself will take center stage…even if no one is watching.

2008
American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, the 18-year-old who's scored
big with his song "Crush," can now add Washington to his list of cities
with a crush on him.

What the rest of the country saw on Fox
last year, he brought to town to help draw attention to the fourth
annual Keeping the Promise to Our Children conference, sponsored by
hip-hop's Russell Simmons and Hollywood philanthropist, moviemaker, and
punk promoter Daphna Ziman.

Archuleta capped his two-day stay at
a dinner for the conference last night. And while stars Shawn King and
Terrance Howard performed, too, it was young Archuleta who earned a State Department standing O in the Benjamin Franklin Diplomatic Reception Room. "I'm
going to try and accompany myself," the young star nervously told the
crowd. Then he sat down at the piano and played an almost-perfect
rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine," belting out the song in that
powerful but youthful voice that allowed him to get so far on Idol. He
then performed Kurt Bestor's "Prayer of the Children" a cappella. The
vocal powerhouse told Whispers that he would have been "a little more
nervous" if Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had shown up.

The
night before, Archuleta and several other stars of the kids conference
were feted at Washington's Teatro Goldoni, just named the city's
favorite by Washington's restaurant association. Check out our photo

I'm an Idol fan, so I sought David out and got to sit with him and his dad, Jeff. I
knew immediately that he is just as genuine and shy as he appeared to
be on the show. He blushed and giggled when people praised his work. He
covered his mouth when eating and trying to talk. He gave out
autographs. And he dressed the part of a kid, right down to his
black Chucks. He described his life since Idol as something of a blur,
with little time at home. But he's been a hit on the music and tour
scene, selling some 700,000 copies of "Crush." And he and his dad are
just beginning work on a Christmas album. Jeff, who did not appear any
bit of the ogre he was said to be behind the Idol curtain, is a
coproducer. He said the album will include traditional songs like
"Silent Night" and up to three written just for David.

gay. Following the outpour of support from "Idol" judges, fellow
contestants and fans, Archuleta announced his respect for Lambert and
downplayed the overall significance of the revelation.

"I know
it's always interesting and surprising and shocking [to people] when
they say those things, but that's up to them, it's their lives,"
Archuleta said, according to a report from Rolling Stone. "I don't
think it was a big surprise."

Archuleta was speaking in
Washington, D.C., where he attended the Children Uniting Nations gala
and performed a fan favorite from his "Idol" days, John Lennon's
"Imagine."

Addressing Lambert's decision to stay mum on his
sexuality throughout the talent competition, Archuleta said, "I don't
think he was trying to be all sneaky and secret about it. I'm sure he
was happy with who he was and stuff, it's not like he was ashamed."

Like
many of the people MTV News has spoken with about the revelation,
Archuleta was not surprised when Lambert came out of the closet. "I
just kind of assumed it; I think everyone else did too," he said. "I
don't think it's a bad thing or anything."

Remarking that
Lambert was "really cool" when the singers met at a recent "Idol"
performance, Archuleta went on to pay respect to the man's talent. "He
seems really confident when he's onstage, but I don't think it comes
across as cocky or anything, and when I talked to him, it seemed like
