Team Archie and Loving Archie are happy
to have helped fulfill the dream of a special fan of David, Alicia—a 12
year old girl from Malaysia. Alicia is an active and well loved member
at Loving Archie. Alicia is battling Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA),
which she has had since she was a baby. Because of her SMA, she can’t
walk due to weakened muscles, and she uses a wheelchair. She developed
scoliosis when she was 9, which was caused by the SMA.
Alicia was supposed to meet David when
he visited Malaysia earlier this year. But, through a cruel twist of
fate, her spinal surgery in the US was scheduled at the same time. Her
surgery in April 2009 was a success, and her recovery has been
phenomenal.
Because she missed her chance to see
David in Malaysia, both Team Archie and LAF made it their mission to
make sure Alicia would get to see David during her recovery here in the
states. Alicia was not only able to watch David sing live in Del Mar on
June 20, 2009, she was also able to meet him in person! We are
incredibly thankful to everybody who got involved in making her dream
come true!
From Matt @ LAF:
Watching David gracefully interact with
Alicia gave me chills. It’s as if he had pulled her into their own
little world, where they were able to share something private and
special together.
When David asked Alicia what her
favorite song was, she relied, “You Can.” David was asked if he was
going to sing that song tonight, and he impishly replied, “Maybe.” Then
he followed it up with his trademark giggle and big, bright smile. At
that moment, I knew that David was going to do something that he had
never done on tour before: dedicate You Can to Alicia that night.
From Alicia:
And somewhere between all this amazingness, I asked my waffle question!!
“David, can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Do you umm like pancakes or waffles?”
“Umm actually, I prefer crepes!”
This is such a touching story! I’m
happy that David dedicated ‘You Can’ to Alicia, just like he dedicated
this love song to me because it’s also one of my favorites and I also
have scoliosis problem like Alicia.
God bless you, Alicia!
